In 1822, Albert Thurston, a London haberdasher, popularized modern suspenders as "braces" because the skirts and trousers of the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth century were cut so high that belts were impractical.
The trend for suspenders has fluctuated over the last century, alternating with belts in general preference, but the vintage style fashion seems to be making a comeback.
